Work began in June 2014 to respond to the challenge of repairing the fabric and making the building as waterproof as possible. The church, grade II* listed, was in desperate need of repair and renovation and was placed on the National Heritage At Risk register.
Following a detailed architectural survey, the cost of the repair work was given as £193,331 (inc VAT). We have been fortunate to have been awarded an English Heritage grant of £83,000 towards this cost and have been given other generous grants by the All Churches Trust Ltd., Christians at Telham, the Frewen Chapel Trust, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Leslie Foundation, the Wolfson Foundation, and Sussex Historic Churches Trust. St Mary’s was also able to reclaim VAT on the work and professional fees through the Listed Places of Worship Scheme.
As a result of the above and especially the response to St Mary’s public appeal, amazing fund raising events and donations from the congregation the sum needed was raised and work is now nearing practical completion.
Our thanks go not only to all the above but also to out Supervising Architect, Ms Karen Butti of Thomas Ford & Partners, who led us through the complicated process and made sure the work was up to conservation standards. The work was carried out by PAYE Stonework and Restoration Ltd and we thanks in particular Mike Nevin and his team for his professionalism and unflappable response under pressure. It has been a pleasure to see the skills of real craftsmen at work.
After such a wet winter it has been so gratifying to see the rain water going down the gutters and drains instead of into the church!
The successful repairs have allowed us to continue with our plans to reorder St Mary’s to make it a more welcoming and flexible place of Christian worship. The sound system, now over 20 years old, is one of our next projects and if you would like to donate towards this or the present and future work of ministry of St. Mary’s Church Northiam please contact Rod White (Rector) 01797 253118
